Revelation Cheatsheets
This is designed as an overview and companion for reading Revelation. For my extensive research, click here > Revelation
Revelation is steeped in Old Testament Jewish symbolism and allusion that can be hard for modern day readers to understand. Below are cheatsheets for every chapter of Revelation which can be used as a companion to aid in understanding some of the confusing/hard-to-understand elements of that chapter.
General Keys of Interpreting Revelation
Before jumping into specific chapters, we must recognise the primary keys of interpreting Revelation.
- Read Revelation as symbols and visions, not literal history.
- Always keep Jesus at the centre.
- Let the Bible interpret itself: the Old Testament fulfilled in Christ and explained by the New.
- See Revelation as cycles of visions covering the church age from different angles.
- Treat numbers as symbols, and apply the message as encouragement for all believers.
Symbolic, Not Literalistic: Revelation is a book of visions and signs (sēmainō, 1:1).
- Default: interpret symbolically unless forced to read literally.
- Genre blend: epistle, prophecy, apocalyptic.
Christ at the Centre: it is the revelation of Jesus Christ (Rev 1:1).
- Displays the glory of the triune God, Christ's sovereignty over history, and His worthiness to open God's plan (Rev 5).
Rooted in the Old Testament: there are more OT allusions than all other NT books combined.
- Key sources: Psalms, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel.
- Revelation unseals Daniel's vision (mentioned in Dan 12; Rev 5).
Interpreted by the New Covenant: as Jesus is the fulfilment of OT
- The Old Testament is fulfilled in Christ and the New Covenant. Jesus is the goal and substance of the Law and Prophets (Lk 24:27, 44; Matt 5:17; 2 Cor 1:20).
- Therefore, the NT interprets the OT, not the reverse.
- Scripture interprets Scripture: unclear visions are read in light of clear teaching in Gospels and Epistles.
Cyclical Structure (Recapitulation)
- Revelation is not linear history but parallel visions of the church age, from different angles. Like different camera angles of the same scene.
- Parallel Visions in Revelation: Seals (6-7), Trumpets (8-11), Bowls (15-16), Beasts/Babylon (12-14; 17-19), Millennium (20)
- Each cycle spans the church age with trials, judgments, and conflict.
- Each cycle ends in final judgment / Christ's return (6:17; 11:18; 16:17; 19:11-21; 20:11-15).
- Revelation retells the same period from different angles, intensifying toward the new creation (21-22).
- Parallel Visions in Revelation: Seals (6-7), Trumpets (8-11), Bowls (15-16), Beasts/Babylon (12-14; 17-19), Millennium (20)
- Cycles intensify toward the end.
- Rev 1:19 outlines past (ch. 1), present (ch. 2-3), and future visions (ch. 4-22).
- Rev 20 = recap of the interadvent age, not post-19 chronology.
Symbolic Numbers
- Numbers are theological symbols, not statistics.
- 7 = completeness, 4 = universality, 12 = God's people, 1000 = fullness/long duration, 666 = human rebellion falling short of divine perfection (777).
Pastoral and Universal Purpose
- Addressed to seven real churches, for the whole Church in every age.
- Aim: encourage endurance in suffering and persecution.
- Blessing promised to those who read, hear, and obey (Rev 1:3).
- Most likely written AD 90-96 under Domitian.
Super-Brief Cheatsheet
#Cheatsheets for every chapter are below, but here is a succinct one-pager

- The Lamb (Rev 5): Jesus, slain yet standing; centre of the book.
- The Dragon (12): Satan, the counterfeit ruler.
- Beast from the sea (13:1): oppressive empire/state power.
- Beast from the earth, the false prophet (13:11): deceptive religion/ideology that props up power.
- Babylon (17-18): the world-system of wealth, idolatry, and injustice.
- The Saints/144,000 (7; 14:1): the whole people of God, sealed and preserved.
- The Two Witnesses (11): the church's prophetic testimony under pressure.
- The Woman and the Child (12): God's people and the Messiah.
- The New Jerusalem (21-22): God with his people in the new creation.
Numbers:
- 7 = completeness (Spirit, churches, seals, trumpets, bowls)
- 4 = the whole earth (four corners/winds)
- 12 = the people of God (12 tribes + 12 apostles)
- 3.5 (42 months/1,260 days) = limited period of trial within God's control
- 10 = full measure of power
- 1,000 = very great fullness (the millennium)
- 666 = human power absolutised and falling short of God (a parody of 7)
Reading Checklist (before you interpret, ask):
- Where am I in the cycles (seals, trumpets, bowls)? Is this another camera angle?
- What Old Testament passage is being echoed?
- What symbols are defined in-book (e.g., lampstands = churches)?
- How do the letters in chapters 2-3 echo here? What pastoral issue is in view?
- Where does this unit land: judgment, salvation, or both?
- What response is called for: worship, witness, endurance, repentance?
