Research: Holy Spirit - Indwelling, Filling, and Tongues, Babel, Pentecost, and the Reversal of Language Division
Main Point: The Holy Spirit is not a spiritual power rating. He is God's restoring presence, already in every believer, remaking the individual and rebuilding His church through them.
The Pentecost Problem
There's an unspoken assumption in many Pentecostal contexts: the Spirit functions like a power level, measured by experience, with some Christians operating on a higher tier than others. This sermon returns to what actually happened on the Day of Pentecost.
Back to the Beginning
- When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
- And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
- And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
- And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
- Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
- And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
The common instinct is to reduce Pentecost to two things: tongues and power. That reading is not wrong, but it misses the actual point. Tongues are not the point of Pentecost.
Paul addresses this directly in 1 Corinthians 12:30: "All don't speak in tongues, do they?" Those without the gift of tongues still possess the Spirit fully.
The Babel Reversal
The presence of tongues at Pentecost reveals God's purpose for the Spirit in the church. To understand why, go back to Genesis 11.
Babel (Genesis 11):
- Humanity united, chose to "make a name for themselves."
- Built a Ziggurat, a structure designed to bring the gods down and manipulate them through sacrifice.
- God's design for humanity was one people, one language, one mission: fill the earth, bear His image, extend His garden across creation.
- Instead, humanity turned inward, building a monument to its own greatness, seeking to control God rather than know Him.
- God's response: judgment. He scattered them and divided their languages. The mission shattered.
Pentecost (Acts 2):
- Jews from every nation had gathered in Jerusalem for the Feast of Weeks.
- The Spirit falls, and the disciples begin speaking in languages they had never learned.
- Every person hears the gospel in their own mother tongue.
- 3,000 believe that day. They return home carrying the church with them.
- Pentecost was the first global church-planting mission in history.
The connection:
- Languages divided at Babel are bridged at Pentecost.
- The Spirit's first act was not to give 120 people a private spiritual experience in an upper room. It was to cross every language barrier that human pride had created.
- The mission Babel had fractured was re-launched.
- Pentecost reversed the inward collapse of Babel with an outward declaration of the Gospel.
Jewish tradition: The Torah was given at Sinai at this same feast, fifty days after Passover. At Sinai, God gave the Law on stone and began forming a people. At Pentecost, the Spirit writes the law on hearts and begins forming a global people (cf. Ezekiel 36:26-27).
The arc: Creation → fall → Babel → Abraham → Israel → Law → Jesus reverses Adam at the cross → resurrection → ascension → Spirit poured out, reversing Babel at Pentecost.
The Holy Spirit is the agent of God's restoration, not a spiritual power rating.
He's Remaking You from the Inside
16. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Common (mis)reading: flesh vs. Spirit as two natures in an internal tug of war, the material pulling toward the bad list, the immaterial pulling toward the good list. This reading derives from Platonic dualism, not Paul.
Douglas Moo's correction: After extensive study of Paul's use of "flesh," Moo argues Paul's contrast is not body vs. spirit (Platonic), but two ages:
- Flesh = life characterised by the old age: life apart from Christ, oriented around self, operating as if the cross did not happen.
- Spirit = life in the new age: shaped by resurrection, re-oriented around God.
The works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit are not checklists. They are the symptoms of two ages. The fruit of the Spirit (singular, not plural) is the unified character of a person being remade by the Spirit. It is what a restored human being looks like.
23. We ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Paul calls the Spirit himself the firstfruits, the first instalment of the full harvest that is coming. In ancient Israel, firstfruits were the first crops offered to God as a pledge of the complete harvest to come.
- The Spirit in you is not a little bit of God you are hoping to get more of.
- He is the firstfruits, the guarantee that everything God has promised will arrive in full.
- The Spirit is God's down payment, His pledge that what He has started He will complete.
There is a "not yet" aspect to the Christian life: the body is still fallen, the old age still presses in. But the Spirit is not evidence that God is unfinished and you are at twenty percent. He is evidence that the full harvest is certain.
He's Rebuilding His Church Through You
4. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
5. and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
6. and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
7. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
The Corinthian church had elevated tongues as a spiritual status marker. Paul spends three chapters correcting this.
The purpose of every spiritual gift: the common good. Not one gift listed in 1 Corinthians 12-14 exists for private spiritual experience. Even tongues, which builds up the individual, Paul says should be interpreted for the common good of the church.
- If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
- And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
The structure of 1 Corinthians 12-14:
- Ch. 12: Gifts are diverse, given by one Spirit, for one body.
- Ch. 13: The motivation that makes them function as intended is love.
- Ch. 14: The practical standard is edification. Am I building the church?
Love is not the alternative to the gifts. Love is the system the gifts run on.
- Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
Note the order: love first, then gifts. The imperative "earnestly desire" (Greek: zēloute) is a command, not a suggestion. Paul commands the pursuit of gifts precisely because love for the church demands them. The problem at Corinth was not the gifts but the absence of love.
Prophecy is God giving a word for someone. It begins with love for the person, not desire for the gift. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:31 that the Spirit can bring all to prophesy. Not because all are official prophets, but because the Spirit wants to love and build people through those who are willing.
The Danger of Experience-Based Confidence
When confidence in God's presence is built on experiences (tongues, feelings in worship, prophetic words), the moment those experiences dry up, the foundation collapses. The internal logic becomes: "if the experience is the evidence, and the experience is gone, does that mean God is not here?"
This is a theology problem, not a spiritual problem.
9. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
The logic of Scripture: when you repent and believe in Jesus, you receive the Spirit, regardless of experience, feeling, or spiritual gifting. You are not waiting for the Spirit. He is already in you.
Receive What You Already Have
18. be filled with the Holy Spirit,
Exegetical note: "Be filled" is present continuous passive in Greek: plērousthe. Not a one-time transaction. An ongoing posture: keep on being filled, keep on being filled. The filling is not a singular event you have not yet had. It's an ongoing whole-life orientation toward the Spirit who is already present.
The sailboat image (Craig Keener): The Spirit is the wind: present, active, already blowing. The question is not whether the wind is blowing. The question is whether the sail is oriented to receive it. Open the sail.
The question is not acquisition. It is co-operation.
19. Do not quench the Spirit.
Also present continuous: "stop continuing to quench." Three ways we quench the Spirit:
- Unbelief: living as though He is not already here, already active, already remaking us.
- Pride: insisting on our own version of what the Spirit moving looks like, and dismissing what does not match.
- Passivity: waiting for a feeling before acting.
Summary
The Spirit is not a power upgrade you have not yet received. He is God's restoring presence already in you.
- He is remaking you: the fruit of the Spirit is what happens as you cooperate with what is already at work in you.
- He is rebuilding His church through you. He uses gifts to love people. The question is not "what gift do I have?" but "how is the Spirit trying to move through me today for the person next to me?"
- He reversed Babel. He is reversing the curse. He is remaking His people through us.
- The question is whether you will open the sail.
Prayer - Three Groups
Group 1: Those running on empty because they have been waiting for an experience rather than cooperating with a presence that has already arrived.
- God, I believe you are in me. Teach me to cooperate.
Group 2: Those who have had significant spiritual experiences, but have made those experiences the standard, and subtly begun to divide the room into haves and have-nots.
- The Spirit distributes to each as He wills, for the common good. Your gift is not a level. It is a tool for love.
Group 3: Those who have never stepped into faith (around church, possibly for years) but not yet said yes to Jesus.
- The Spirit is how you know that Jesus is alive and present and accessible right now. You don't need to feel anything to step in. You just need to turn.
