Youth Group Connect - The Beatitudes
Context for Verse
- Jesus has only just started his ministry in Galilee, and the crowd following him is mostly poor workers living under Roman occupation. Aka. nobody important.
- He walks up the mountainside and sits down, which was how a rabbi taught. Kind of like how Israel would listen to Moses, it would remind th eJewish people of that.
- "Blessed" is not a feeling. Jesus is announcing who is actually well off in God's kingdom.
- Notes, these beattitudes are not entry requirements (this isn't about salvation). Jesus is describing people who already belong, not listing what you need to get in.
- Fun Fact: "Beatitudes" comes from the Latin beatitudo, which means blessed.
Verse
Try and get multiple people to read a few verses at a time.
- One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him,
- and he began to teach them.
- "God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
- God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
- God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
- God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
- God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
- God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
- God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.
- God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
- God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.
- Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way."
Questions
Pick 3 or 4. Spend the most time on Q2 and Q4.
Q1. Read the list again slowly and notice what kind of person keeps showing up. If you didn't know this was the Bible, would you have picked these as the people God calls blessed?
Q2. Jesus doesn't say God will bless you once you become poor in spirit. He says God blesses people who already are. What's the difference between a list of things to achieve and a description of who already belongs, and which one is this?
Q3. Verse 3 talks about people who are "poor and realise their need for him." What does that genuinely look like for you, and what does the opposite look like in your year group?
Q4. Verse 11 says you are blessed when people mock you and lie about you (which doesn't sound like a blessing). What do you think Jesus means, and does knowing it help while it is happening?
Q5. Pick one of the nine and decide which is hardest to believe is true. What would this look like in your life this week?
Pray
- Thank God that his kingdom belongs to the people everyone else overlooks
- Pray for the particular people and situations that came up in Q5
The heart of this passage is that these nine lines are declarations, not requirements. Jesus is not handing out nine ways to earn God's favour. He is announcing who the kingdom already belongs to.
Two misinterpretations:
- When it becomes a checklist, and the group leaves with nine new ways to fail.
- It gets flattened into "be nice and God will make you happy", which the passage never says.
Keep going back to who is speaking and what he is announcing.
Pastorally: people hear these as personality traits they either have or don't. Make sure the group leaves knowing that Jesus is describing what the kingdom does to a person, not what a person must produce before God will take them.
Does "blessed" just mean happy? No, it is a verdict about who is genuinely well off in God's eyes, which is often the opposite of who feels good.
Are these nine different types of people? It is one picture from nine angles, showing what a person shaped by God's kingdom actually looks like.
When do the humble "inherit the whole earth"? When Christ returns and creation is made new, rather than as a promise of success now.
If nobody persecutes me, am I doing it wrong? No. Verse 10 says persecuted "for doing right" ( not for being annoying) and plenty of Christians never face it.
Does "those who mourn" mean God wants me sad? No, it means grief over sin and a broken world.
Isn't being humble just being a doormat? No. The word means strength held under control.
